Description and uses:
The colour of a methyl orange solution depends on the pH of the solution. Below pH = 3.1 it is a clear red, above 4.4 a clear yellow.

This makes it very suitable as an acid-base titration indicator, particularly for the titration of weak bases (ammonia and carbonates/bicarbonates for instance) with strong acids (HCl or H2SO4 typically). Add a few drops of the indicator solution to the sample of the solution to be titrated and titrate until the clear endpoint (transition from red to yellow) occurs.

Lead Acetate Testing Solution - 50 ml

Description and uses:
This testing solution shows all the typical reactions of an aqueous lead (II) solution.

With iodide ions (I-) yellow lead (II) iodide (PbI2) is formed, with sulphate ions, white lead (II) sulphate (PbSO4).

Test sample solutions for chromium (Cr) by oxidising to Cr (VI) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, then simmer to destroy residual peroxide), then add lead acetate test solution. Chromate (CrO4(2-)) and dichromate (Cr2O7(2-)) then causes intensely yellow lead (II) chromate (PbCrO4) to precipitate, if chromium was initially present.

This test solution is also extremely sensitive to sulphide ions (S2-) because black lead (II) sulphide is extremely insoluble. Apply this solution to good quality filter or blotting paper to obtain so-called ‘lead acetate paper’ with a low detection limit for sulphides, even hydrogen sulphide (H2S, rotting eggs or ‘stink bomb’ gas) in the air.

Description and uses: this is a high end grade, both in purity and fineness (140 mesh, 105 micron) suitable for pyrotechnical uses, survivalism (fire making) as well as various inorganic and organic synthesis.

With many powdered strong oxidisers magnesium powder forms flash powders (reaction temperature reached is so high reaction products instantly vapourise).

In organic chemistry it's mainly used in Grignard reactions. This high grade is perfectly suitable as a Grignard substrate.

As a reducing agent in inorganic chemistry it reacts with anhydrous fluorides much the same way aluminium powder reacts with anhydrous oxides. Among the fluorides that can be successfully reduced to lump metal (and magnesium fluoride as a by-product) are several D-block element fluorides (TiF3, ZrF4 and others), as well as UF4 and ThF4.

From a molten mixture of anhydrous manganese (II) chloride and potassium chloride, slowly added magnesium powder precipitates pure manganese metal (a laboratory preparation method of manganese metal).

Magnesium is also a very powerful reducing agent in aqueous conditions.

Description and uses: It is non-combustible. It corrodes aluminum. Used as a disinfectant, in etching glass, metal casting, and electroplating. The hardening of Plaster of Paris (Gypsum) is another application which probably relies on the formation of hard and insoluble CaF2.

This chemical is the basic ammonium salt of hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6). In solution it is slightly alkaline due to hydrolysis:

SiF6(2-)(aq) + H2O(l) === > HSiF6(-)(aq) + OH-(aq)

The potassium salt of hexafluorosilicic acid is poorly soluble in water, the corresponding barium salt is water insoluble.

Hexafluorosilicates are considered ‘imperfect complexes’ and are similar in that respect to the salts of hexachlorostannic acid (H2SnCl6) and hexachloroantimonic acid (HSbCl6).

Chromium Sulphate Hydrate - Cr2(SO4)3.12H2O - 99 % - 100 g

Description and uses: one of the most important, highly water soluble chromic (Cr III) compounds. Industrially used as a tanning agent.

Combined with potassium sulphate it forms a typical alum (chromium alum - KCr(SO4)2.12H2O) which crystallises into large, purple octagonal crystals.

With strong alkali chromium hydroxide (Cr(OH)3) is precipitated but due to chromium’s amphoterism this dissolves in excess alkali to blue-green chromite (Cr(OH)4(-)), showing strong similarity with aluminium in that respect. Chromite can be oxidised easily with hydrogen peroxide, to yellow chromate (CrO4(2-)), a Cr VI compound. On acidification the dichromate ion - Cr2O7(2-) is then formed.

Cr III compounds can be reduced by means of zinc powder (available from this seller) in acidic conditions, to form the poorly stable Cr2+ ion.

With ferrous ions (Fe2+) Prussian Blue (idealised: Fe7(CN)18) is formed and potassium hexacyanoferrate can thus be used as a detector of ferrous compounds.

Due to near perfect complexation, potassium hexacyanoferrate is relatively non-toxic, despite the high cyanide content. In highly acidic conditions the highly toxic gas HCN (hydrogen cyanide) may be formed, so caution is needed there.

It is perhaps most used for a simple qualitative test for phosphates: acidification of the sample and adding ammonium orthomolybdate results in a yellow colouration in the case of a phosphate positive sample.

The determination of phosphorus, arsenic, silicon and germanium are examples of the use of heteropoly-molybdenum blue in analytical chemistry. The following example describes the determination of phosphorus. A sample containing the phosphate is mixed with an acid solution of MoVI, for example ammonium molybdate, to produce PMo12O403−, which has an α-Keggin structure. This anion is then reduced by, for example, ascorbic acid or SnCl2, to form the blue coloured β-keggin ion, PMo12O407−. The amount of the blue coloured ion produced is proportional to the amount of phosphate present and the absorption can be measured using a colorimeter to determine the amount of phosphorus. Examples of procedures are:

• the analysis of phosphate in sea water.
• standard methods for determining phosphorus and silicon content of metals and metal ores. (e.g. BSI and ISO standards)
• the determination of germanium and arsenic

The comparison of the measured absorption against readings taken for analyses of standard solutions means that a detailed understanding of the structure of the blue complex was unnecessary.

Description and uses: an important pseudohalide compound, highly soluble in water and soluble also in acetone.

With Fe3+(aq) (ferric ion) it forms a blood red complex; FeSCN2+, a property used in analytical chemistry as a visual test for ferric ions. A KSCN solution is used in volumetric analysis as an indicator solution for redox titrations, using acidified ferric ammonium alum as titrant solution.

The red colour of the FeSCN2+ complex causes NH4SCN to be used for creating blood effects for film or theatre.
